Meetings of the Indiana Academy of Science

| ANNUAL
MEETING
The Annual Meeting of the Indiana Academy of Science is held in the fall. Papers on scientific research and science education are presented, and awards and special recognition are conferred. There is a broad spectrum of participants providing opportunity for exchange of scientific information. |
INDIANA ACADEMY OF SCIENCE SPRING MEETING
April 18 and 19, 2008
UNIVERSITY OF EVANSIVLLE
Program Schedule for Indiana Academy of Science Spring 2008 Meeting
Friday April 18
1:00 PM Executive Committee/IAS Council Meeting Library Board Room (Bower-Suhrheinrich Library)

Speaker for the April 18 Banquet
The speaker for the spring meeting is Dr. Cris Hochwender, associate professor of biology at the University of Evansville. Hochwender is an evolutionary ecologist who is broadly interested in plant-herbivore interactions, including plant genetic variation as a structuring force of arthropod herbivore communities, chemical defense by plants, and tri-trophic interactions. Much of his recent research in this area has used a hybrid willow system to examine these questions. The title of Hochwender’s talk is “Playing Shoots and Ladders: Exploring Plant Genetic Effects on Community Structure in a Hybrid Willow System.”
The cost of the meal for the banquet is anticipated to be $18.00 (A registration form will be available online soon)
Saturday April 19
9:00 AM Field Trip Wessleman Woods
Field Trip for Saturday, April 19
The Saturday field trip will be to Wesselman Woods Nature Preserve (WWNP). WWNP is a National Natural Landmark and a State Nature Preserve with over 190 acres of virgin bottomland hardwood forest complemented by another 50 acres of younger forest. No other city in the United States with a population similar to or exceeding that of Evansville has, within its corporate limits, a forest of such acreage in a pleasantly pastoral setting. Many of the trees in WWNP are over 100 feet tall, and some are estimated to be nearly 300 years old. The preserve boasts a diversity of tree, shrub, and wildflower species. Moreover, it serves as an important habitat for numerous species of amphibians, reptiles, birds, and mammals. The preserve has over six miles of walking trials that provide the prefect atmosphere for relaxing nature walks. WWNP also features a reconstructed prairie, manmade and seasonal pond, and a nature center with wildlife observation areas.

The following events are not Indiana Academy of Science sponsored events, but may be of interest to some members:
Science Olympiad
The Science Olympiad is an international nonprofit organization devoted to improving the quality of science education, increasing student interest in science and providing recognition for outstanding achievement in science education by both students and teachers. These goals are accomplished through classroom activities, research, training workshops and the encouragement of intramural, district, regional, state and national tournaments. The Science Olympiad tournaments are rigorous academic interscholastic competitions that consist of a series of individual and team events which students prepare for during the year. These challenging and motivational events are well balanced between the various science disciplines of biology, earth science, chemistry, physics, computers and technology. There is also a balance between events requiring knowledge of science facts, concepts, processes, skills and science applications. In addition, during the day there are open house activities which consist of science and mathematics demonstrations, activities and career counseling sessions conducted by professors and scientists at the host institution occurring concurrently with the events.
For more information about becoming a sponsor or getting your school involved in Science Olympiad, please visit the Indiana website for Science Olympiad.
Hoosier Association of Science Teachers (HASTI)
For science educators, K - 16, a way to keep involved in science events in Indiana. For more information about HASTI and their annual meeting, please visit their website at http://www.hasti.org/
Butler
Undergraduate Research Conference
The 2007 Butler
Undergraduate Research Conference will be held on April 18th, 2008.
This past year, again the conference was very successful with over 500
presentations from about 35 institutions, mostly in the Mid-West, many
from institutions with IAS affiliation. The conference usually has an
early submission deadline. Watching the web site for detailed announcements
