IAS Section Chair Duties
As currently structured, each year a section chair is elected by the section membership for the following section meeting. The Section Chair has the responsibility and privilege of soliciting colleagues to present papers, reminding the section members of upcoming due dates, and conducting the meeting.
Section Chairs are members of the Indiana Academy of Science Council and have responsibility for Academy policy. They have interaction with the Executive Council as well as the membership. This role is a critical role in our organization and should be revitalized.
The President –Elect will be responsible for contacting Section Chairs and encouraging participation.
Section
Chairs should:
1) Plan to contact their
section membership at least on a semiannual basis (Annual meeting & spring
meeting + others).
2) Report the successes
of their section members (awards, honors, recognition, tenure, etc.) to the
honors and awards committee, and the Newsletter Editor.
3) Solicit new members
to join the Academy in their section and encourage section memberships to be
maintained.
4) Be resource persons
for the Executive team and the Council when seeking future officers, or committee
leaders.
5) Plan to attend and
participate in the Council meetings and report back to the Section any Council
issues in the Section business meeting.
6) Foster new leadership,
and strengthen existing leadership in the section.
7) Moderate their own
section meetings in a timely, professional manner.
8) Assist new Chairs with
duties of the Chair.
9) Chair their Section
business meetings with clear purpose and planned agendas. It might be
well for the Section Chair to identify candidates for nomination prior to the
business meeting.
10) Have fun with their
section members – be professional, practice good science, but have fun along
the way.
