SUMMARY:Science With a Twist: Butterfly Colors In Black & White (And Other Colors Too!)
DESCRIPTION:Why do some butterflies turn out darker than others — and what does that have to do with the weather? Dr. Andrew Stoehr studies how temperature shapes wing color and pattern in butterflies\, from cabbage whites in Indiana fields to specimens shipped in from Russia\, New Zealand\, and beyond. Join us for an evening of casual science and conversation as he shares what wings can tell us about a changing climate. \nWhat to Expect: Science With A Twist (SWAT) is a casual science and networking event hosted by the Indiana Academy of Science. These events bring together scientists\, educators\, engineers\, students\, and community members for informal conversations about science in a relaxed setting. Talks are short and accessible—no scientific background required\, just curiosity! \nAbout the Speaker: Dr. Andrew Stoehr grew up in Indianapolis\, Indiana and graduated from Indiana University with a degree in biology. He completed a master’s degree at Auburn University\, studying coloration\, hormones\, and behavior in House Finches. He completed his PhD at the University of California-Riverside\, where he studied coloration\, behavior\, and ecological immunity in cabbage white butterflies. His post-doctoral work at Yale University explored the evolutionary developmental genetics of butterfly wing coloration. Since 2012 he has been a professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Butler University where he continues to study coloration in butterflies and other insects. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to Science on Tap! Join us for an exciting talk from Dr. Cordelia Running\, Associate Professor in the Department of Nutrition Science at Purdue University. \n“Food should taste good–even when it’s healthy for you\, and even when you aren’t healthy.” \nThis belief drives Dr. Cordelia Running’s research. Her lab (the Saliva\, Perception\, Ingestion\, and Tongues Lab–SPIT lab) studies oral sensations and secretions to improve foods for health. Projects include experiments testing how saliva adapts to different diets. Potentially\, saliva may adapt to make foods less bitter\, or to break down fatty mixtures or starchy foods more quickly. This not only changes flavor and texture of foods\, but also could change how nutrients are absorbed. Additionally\, Dr. Running is looking into ways to help people reduce their sugar intake and increase their vegetable intake. These studies all emphasize how flavor is an important part of how people decide what to eat\, and so addressing flavor is a vital part of helping people successfully improve their diet. \nAfter all\, food can only be healthy\, or unhealthy\, if it’s eaten. \nThis event is sponsored by Purdue’s College of Health and Sciences\, thank you for your support! \nCost: Free to attend—registration required. DESCRIPTION:How do you tell the story of who you are\, what interests you\, and where you want to go? \nIn this interactive workshop\, Dr. Michelle Marincel Payne\, Associate Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology\, will help students explore how their experiences\, interests\, and goals can become part of their personal STEM story. \nInspired by Rose-Hulman’s Story@Rose project\, students will reflect on their past\, present\, and future\, create their own stories\, exchange feedback with peers\, and practice communicating who they are as emerging scientists\, engineers\, mathematicians\, and STEM professionals. \nStudents will leave with practical experience telling their story—an important skill for college applications\, scholarships\, interviews\, networking\, research opportunities\, and future careers. \nNote: This workshop is hybrid\, with both virtual and in-person registration available!
