Flora of Chicago Region receives distinguished award!
The Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries, Inc. (CBHL) presented its twentieth Annual Literature Awards on May 17, 2019. This presentation was made in Phoenix during CBHL's 51st Annual Meeting hosted by the Desert Botanical Garden. The CBHL Annual Literature Awards, created to recognize significant contributions to the literature of botany and horticulture, this year honored six remarkable works.
The receipt of the 2019 Award of Excellence in Botany and Floras was Flora of the Chicago Region: A Floristic and Ecological Synthesis by Gerould Wilhelm and Laura Rericha, with illustrations by Mary Marguerite Lowther and published by the Indiana Academy of Science. This groundbreaking work is recognized for documenting the relationship between flora and fauna, habitat descriptions, and the consequences of climate change and habitat degradation in the Chicago region.
"This will be considered the most complete flora ever written for any place in the U.S. They have meticulously and accurately brought the status of vascular plants in the Chicago region up-to-date, while painstakingly recording an incredible array of interactions between the flora and other organisms, especially insects. The intricate pollination of some plants, many of these associations not previously known or recorded, is almost beyond belief."
- Robert H. Mohlenbrock, Distinguished professor emeritus, SIU Carbondale
